Mi Paste One

MI Paste ONE is an over‐the‐counter therapeutic fluoride toothpaste developed by GC America. It is a “two-in-one” product that combines Recaldent® (CPP-ACP, a milk-derived casein phosphopeptide–amorphous calcium phosphate complex) with fluoride, calcium and phosphate to strengthen enamel during regular brushing. In practice, it delivers 5% potassium nitrate (for nerve desensitization) and 0.24% sodium fluoride (for anti‐cavity protection). The manufacturer markets it as a gentle, low-abrasive paste (SLS‐free, RDA 64) that helps remineralize enamel, prevent “white spot” lesions, and relieve tooth sensitivity. (Recaldent® in MI Paste ONE supplies bioavailable calcium and phosphate, which with fluoride promotes fluorapatite formation.) The product is flavored cool mint and intended to be used like a normal toothpaste.

Uses (Indications)

MI Paste ONE is indicated for preventive dental care. Its active ingredients aid in preventing dental cavities and in building protection against tooth sensitivity (to cold, heat, acids, or sweets). In addition, it is commonly used to remineralize early enamel lesions (so-called “white spot” caries) and to reduce hypersensitivity. Dental professionals also recommend it for patients with enamel erosion, enamel wear, or sensitivity from recent professional whitening. In summary, its uses include:

• Caries prevention – ideal for patients at risk of dental decay (it deposits fluoride and calcium into enamel) .
• Sensitivity relief – potassium nitrate helps block nerve pain signals, reducing sensitivity to thermal or tactile stimuli.
• Enamel remineralization – the CPP-ACP complex delivers calcium and phosphate to rebuild weakened enamel and prevent or reverse early demineralization.
• White spot lesion management – used to treat non-cavitated (early) caries lesions, such as spots on tooth surfaces.
• Protection against erosion and wear – helps buffer acids in reflux or erosive diets.
• General oral maintenance – especially beneficial for people with dry mouth or poor plaque control, as it provides extra minerals and fluoride.

MI Paste ONE is not a medication for systemic illness – it will not cure infections or systemic disease. It should only be used as directed for dental purposes.

How to Use (Directions)

MI Paste ONE is used in place of your regular toothpaste when brushing. For adults and children over 12 years old, the typical instructions (from the official label) are:

• Apply a pea-sized amount of MI Paste ONE onto a soft-bristle toothbrush. Wetting the brush briefly is optional.
• Brush thoroughly for about 2 minutes, covering all tooth surfaces. Use gentle circular motions, as you would with any fluoride toothpaste.
• Spit out the excess paste. Do not rinse immediately. Allow the fluoride and calcium/phosphate to remain on the teeth for extra effect. Also avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after brushing.
• Use the toothpaste twice daily (morning and night) for best results. Replace the cap tightly after use.

For children under 12 years, MI Paste ONE should only be used upon a dentist’s recommendation. Children should be supervised during brushing to minimize swallowing (due to the fluoride content). If a child accidentally swallows a large amount of the paste (beyond normal brushing), contact Poison Control or seek medical help at once.

Side Effects and Adverse Reactions

MI Paste ONE is generally well tolerated. Because it is used topically like regular toothpaste, serious side effects are rare. Possible reactions include:

• Allergic reactions: The most important risk is allergy. MI Paste ONE contains milk protein (casein) and parabens in the Recadent complex. People with a known allergy to milk proteins or to hydroxybenzoates (methyl/propyl/ethyl paraben preservatives) should not use this product. Signs of allergy could include rash, itching, facial swelling, or trouble breathing – if any of these occur, stop use immediately and seek medical attention.
• Oral irritation: In a few people, toothpastes can cause minor irritation or stinging. MI Paste ONE is SLS-free and uses a milder surfactant, so it’s less likely to cause gum or mucosal irritation than some conventional toothpastes. However, if you experience unusual mouth sores or irritation, discontinue use.
• Fluoride overdose (swallowing): The active fluoride (0.24%) is at a normal toothpaste level, but ingesting large amounts can cause nausea or stomach upset. Keep the paste out of reach of young children. If a child swallows more than used for one brushing, get medical help or call Poison Control.
• Persistent symptoms: If tooth sensitivity or discomfort does not improve within 4 weeks of use, consult a dentist. Persistent pain is not expected if the product is working correctly; a professional evaluation may be needed.

There are no known drug interactions (since this is not a systemic drug), but as with any fluoride toothpaste, you should avoid also using other fluoride products at the same time to prevent excess fluoride exposure.

Precautions and Warnings

• Do not use if allergic: As noted, anyone with an allergy to milk proteins, casein, or parabens should avoid MI Paste ONE.
• Children: Only for use in children 12 years or older, unless otherwise advised by a dentist. In general, supervise children during brushing to ensure they spit it out. Swallowing large amounts of fluoride toothpaste can be toxic.
• Medical conditions: People with very sensitive stomachs or a history of fluoride ingestion issues should brush with caution and spit thoroughly afterwards. If you have severe kidney disease or other conditions affecting calcium/phosphate balance, discuss with your doctor or dentist first.
• Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Because MI Paste ONE is only applied topically and not swallowed, it’s unlikely to affect pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, as a precaution always inform your dentist or doctor of any products you use if you are pregnant or nursing.
• Monitoring: Keep track of how sensitive your teeth are. If irritation, allergic symptoms, or no improvement in sensitivity occur, stop use and see a dentist.

Composition

MI Paste ONE’s active ingredients are sodium fluoride (0.24%) and potassium nitrate (5%). These confer anti-cavity and anti-sensitivity action, respectively. Its inactive ingredients include the Recaldent™ complex (CPP-ACP derived from milk casein), calcium phosphate, xylitol (sweetener), glycerin, and other toothpaste bases. Notably, MI Paste ONE contains no sodium lauryl sulfate and has a relatively low abrasivity (RDA ~64) for gentle cleaning.

Important Advice

• Use as directed: Always follow the brushing technique described, and complete the full course of treatment directed by your dentist. Even if tooth sensitivity improves quickly, continue the twice-daily use for the recommended duration to ensure proper remineralization.
• Not for viruses: Remember that this is a dental product, not an antibiotic or medicine for infections. It will not cure cavities that already require dental fillings, and it won’t treat any illness or infection.
• Storage: Store at room temperature, keep the cap on, and protect from heat. Do not freeze.
