Kenalog 80 mg Injection (Triamcinolone Acetonide)

Kenalog-80 is an injectable corticosteroid (glucocorticoid) formulation. Its generic name is triamcinolone acetonide; the “80” indicates the dose of 80 mg per 1 mL of suspension. The drug is supplied as a sterile aqueous suspension for injection (a milky fluid). Kenalog-80 is a synthetic glucocorticoid with potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. It is intended for intramuscular (IM) or intra-articular injection only and comes as a single-dose 1 mL vial.

Uses

As a corticosteroid injection, Kenalog-80 is used for a wide range of severe inflammatory, allergic, and immune-mediated conditions. According to prescribing information, injectable triamcinolone may be given when oral corticosteroids are impractical, to “tide the patient over” an acute episode. Common indications include severe allergic reactions (e.g. severe asthma exacerbations, drug hypersensitivity, transfusion reactions), dermatologic conditions (e.g. Stevens-Johnson syndrome, pemphigus), rheumatic diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis) and certain endocrine or hematologic disorders. It is also used intra-articularly or into soft tissues for acute bursitis or tenosynovitis to relieve inflammation. In short, Kenalog-80 provides high-dose steroid coverage in settings such as acute joint flares, severe allergies, bronchial inflammation, and other systemic inflammatory diseases. (It is not indicated for minor conditions or routine long-term use; that often requires lower doses or alternate therapy.)

   • Severe skin disorders such as eczema, dermatitis, keloids, and lichen planus.

5. Other Conditions

   • Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease (as part of a broader regimen)
   • Certain hematologic disorders such as immune thrombocytopenia

How It Works

Kenalog acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by suppressing the immune system’s response, thereby reducing symptoms such as swelling, redness, itching, and allergic reactions.

How to Administer:

Kenalog-80 is for deep intramuscular or intra-articular injection only. Under aseptic conditions, the vial should be shaken vigorously to ensure a uniform suspension before drawing up the dose. Inspect the suspension for clumping or crystals; do not use if the product appears frozen or agglomerated. Withdraw the ordered dose (up to the full 1 mL/80 mg), and inject without delay to prevent settling of the suspension. Inject deeply (e.g. into a large muscle like the gluteal or quadriceps) or into the joint/synovial space as ordered. Always aspirate before injection to confirm the needle is not in a blood vessel. Kenalog must not be given intravenously, intradermally, intraocularly, epidurally or into the thecal (spinal) space. (Label warning: “NOT FOR USE IN NEONATES. Contains benzyl alcohol. Kenalog Dosage:

There is no single fixed dose; physicians tailor the dose to the condition. Typical injections range from 40 to 80 mg (0.5–1 mL) for adults, given as a one-time or occasionally repeated dose once symptoms become severe. Intra-articular injections for large joints might use the full 80 mg (1 mL) at one site; for smaller joints or children, lower amounts or smaller volume (diluted) may be used. (In cases of severe flare, sometimes 2 mL (160 mg) may be given split into different sites, but always under specialist guidance.) Because Kenalog-80 is a long-acting steroid, one injection can provide relief for weeks. After administration, monitor the patient for improvement and for side effects.

Precautions & Side Effects:

As a potent systemic steroid, Kenalog can cause many corticosteroid effects. Common acute side effects include temporary pain or flushing at the injection site, muscle weakness, insomnia, and mood changes. More serious risks include suppressed adrenal function, immunosuppression (risk of infection), elevated blood glucose, and fluid/electrolyte imbalances. Because it contains benzyl alcohol, do not use Kenalog-80 in neonates or infants. Avoid injecting into sites of infection. If multiple injections are needed over time, taper doses appropriately to avoid adrenal insufficiency. Contraindications include known hypersensitivity to triamcinolone or any component (including the preservatives.

Kenalog-80 is a prescription-only corticosteroid injection for serious inflammation. It is supplied as a 1 mL single-dose vial containing 80 mg tri­a­mcinolone acetonide. The entire contents are for one injection (the vial is discarded after use). The vial must be shaken and inspected prior to injection. Administer IM (or intra-articular) only, never IV. Use carefully in adults with diabetes, infection, or hypertension. For pediatric or neonatal patients, note that Kenalog-80’s preservative (benzyl alcohol) makes it unsuitable for neonates. With proper technique and dosing, Kenalog-80 can rapidly reduce severe inflammatory symptoms, but always monitor the patient for steroid side effects and consult current guidelines for corticosteroid use.
